The practical things that decide whether a day in Osaka works, in roughly the order they catch people out.

Cash

Japan is more cash-reliant than most visitors expect and Osaka's small restaurants, market stalls and shrines are frequently cash only. Convenience-store ATMs generally accept foreign cards; many bank ATMs do not.

What shuts, and when

Most museums close on Monday. The New Year period closes a great deal, including markets. Individual restaurants take a fixed closing day of their own, which is why a place recommended to you may simply be shut.

When to come

Late March to May and October to early December. June is the rainy season and August is genuinely hot and humid — not merely warm. Cherry blossom and the autumn colour are worth planning around and are also the busiest weeks of the year.

Etiquette that actually matters

No tipping. No eating while walking. Escalators in Osaka are stood on the right — the opposite of Tokyo, and one of the few things Osaka does differently on purpose.
