The castle, the tower and the neon. What is free to look at, what is ticketed, and which are reconstructions.

Osaka charges almost nothing to look at. The canal signs, the market streets, the arcades, the shrine grounds and the castle park are all free and open, and they are most of what people actually remember. What you pay for here is to go up — three separate towers sell a view — to go in, and, more than in any sibling city, to eat.

That is the useful way to plan a budget in this city. In Prague or Vienna the admissions are the line item and the food is incidental; in Osaka it is the other way round. Ten of the sixteen sights below cost nothing at all, and the six that charge are genuinely optional.

This section is being written. The guide above is the section for now. New articles are published across the site about twice a week rather than a section being filled in a day, so this page grows steadily — it is worth looking in again. In the meantime the sixteen sight pages and the plans by trip length are finished, and they are the best place to start.
