Two days lets you add the north of the city and one large paid sight without rushing the first day. The second day is deliberately slower.

Day one
As the one-day plan: the market, the arcades, Dotonbori after dark.

Day two, morning: the castle
Osaka Castle early. The park is free and open long before the keep, and the walk in over the moat is the better half. Decide at the gate whether you want to go up — the queue for the lift is the deciding factor for most people.

Day two, midday: Nakanoshima
Walk west along the river to Nakanoshima. It is flat, quiet and free, and it is the only part of central Osaka that feels unhurried. The museums here are individually ticketed; the island itself is not.
Day two, afternoon: Kita
Umeda is the other centre and it is mostly indoors: department stores, an underground city, and Umeda Sky at the far end of it. Allow more time than the map suggests — Umeda’s underground layout defeats almost everyone the first time.

What is shut when
Most museums here close on Monday. If your second day is a Monday, swap Nakanoshima’s collections for Shitennoji and Shinsekai, both of which are open and mostly free.
